Mercifully not, Nuthatch. We rang the chappie later to find out whether he had managed to contact the owner (the bird was stamped with a number under one wing). He told us the owner had said he should wring its neck as it was no good once it had veered off course during a race, so he had done.

My guess would be that it would have eventually returned 'home'. But maybe once they get the taste for veering off course then they're useless for racing
