Took a nice walk around the far lanes today. Bit on the cloudy side but was a very nice walk, and lots to see.

Abso. lovely, Willpar - fascinating.
At 4.15, the first Vinca, I wonder whether the budded stem to the left of it is an orchid of some kind ??

Hi Placi, I had a look and to me it is a bud of that vinca. When I got home and played the clips back I wondered what was on the lambs tails. Then the penny dropped, and it is a band so part of the tail falls off. First time I have ever seen that. But from the bottom of the lane where the first snowdrops were there is a wood that goes all the way the the Langdon court hotel. It is full of snowdrops, must be thousands of them.

Four ewes and six lambs - two ewes could have had twins or adopted an orphan lamb

A lovely film - I loved seeing all the flowers and the waterfall.

Ah, a stem from the Vinca - I thought it was a separate plant growing in proximity.

I noticed the band on the lamb's tail but didn't think to comment on it. Didn't know of the existence of such a practice. Wonder why ??

Hi Placi, The lambs tail may be a practice about maggots. I know at a certain time of the year, sheep farmers shear around their backside so maggots don't collect in the wool.

Hi Nuthatch, I think some of the lambs were shielded and there were more than likely eight lambs. They seem to have twins most of the time, that's my observation around here anyway. Don't know what breed they are, but are lovely animals and by the looks of it well looked after.

The practice of putting tight rubber bands on a lamb's tail has been common practice for at least fifty years. The reason being as Willpar has correctly stated to make the tail shorter(the bit after the band drops off in a short while) which ultimately helps keep them clean when the threat from fly strike is at it's highest. The lambs in the video must have been only a few days old as they still had their umbilicals attached.
