If it is a Mandarin John, then I would suspect it is a juvenile. It certainly looks young. Nice pic by the way.

Looks like a female mandarin to me. The line from the eye is very characteristic.

They're the ones that nest in tree holes and the chicks take a leap of faith!
Good spot.
