BLACKBIRDS

My Blackbirds (approx. 3 at present) are continuing to eat the Rowan berries that haven't fallen off the tree. I think another three weeks will see the job complete.

My first Blackbird was in the leaves this morning ,only one.

Male blackbird was in my hawthorn this morning, so thought I would watch with my bins. It was looking at the dish of mealworms put out for the smaller birds. But it decided instead to fly down on the berberis. Has nice purple berries, and in flower. As I watched it scoffed down ten berries one after another, and it only flew off because a car as coming along the road. That's a lot of berries for one sitting. Came back again or another male, no yellow beak, but got disturbed.

Same here, Willpar. The blackies (and the wood pigeons ) are attacking the pyracantha berries. They must know when a particular type of berry is j-u-s-t right .

The only berries remaining in the chateau garden ore the Cotoneastar. The Blackbirds are making inroads so they won't last long.

I like the Blackbird but very few this year,

There is 3 blackbirds around, one definitely a handsome looking male and 2 females, they all come to feed separately. One female has a bad leg (whats with birds and leg injuries these days!) and the other hasn't, so I'm sure its 2 birds. Every time the male comes to eat, and if there is a female, he chases them off . Do they usually do that?

Yes they are very possessive of any food source in common with other members of the Thrush family. The Fieldfare for instance makes a Blackbird look like a shrinking violet in comparison.

I spotted a Mrs Blackbird grabbing beakfuls of muddy moss from the shallow end of my nature pond. I have seen it in previous years but not quite so early.
