The new lady managed to do a couple of reports prior to the front line appearance for Springwatch. A small piece about Waxwings where I was not sure that she and the Waxwings were in the same place at the same time. A second piece about Hedgehogs was clearly in the "here's something we prepared earlier" slot.
Yes I enjoyed it a lot. The remote cameras are super sharp now. The battle of the barn was fascinating. Such a shame the stoat got those other 3 nests but it's the circle of life and those ground nesters often have a 2nd or 3rd clutch to compensate for those situations.
I enjoyed it mostly but I felt sometimes they were struggling for content especially in the more remote areas featured. Because I enjoy the wildlife content I can overlook the shortcomings of some of the presenting.
I agree, I find the presenters a bit of a mixed bag. Packham and Strachen are excellent at front of house but some of the others are a bit iffy. I really liked Martin Hughes-Games. It's a shame he's gone, He was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Gillian is good at the pre-recorded stuff and not so good live. I get the feeling she struggles to remember her facts (always looking at her cue cards) and with talking and listening to the director in her ear at the same time. You can tell when she's a little lost as she starts the sentence with 'Now.......er.....' which gives her some thinking time. She also talks very slowly and as if the listeners are 5 years old. Iolo is always excellent and I really like Lucy Cooke. If you ever catch the live cameras during the day Brett Westwood is excellent too. Not so keen on Steve Backshall and I'm not sure who the black guy was in the last week, not seen him before but he wasn't too bad if that was his first live experience.

For me at present the journey to New England was a bit of a luxury being more enjoyed by the presenters than the audience. OK a few different birds and animals but with today's plethora of nature programmes available nothing with the factor.
