...........These last words sent a chill down Andy's spine. Since he'd left school there had been a succession of low skilled jobs he'd fulfilled doing little more than keeping a roof over his family's head and putting food on the table. Latterly he hadn't even done that as Anna had taken over that role while he minded the home and did the chores. Nothing he'd done equipped him to be a farmer in Yorkshire and even with a crash course from Alf it looked like a bridge too far. Andy was riddled with self doubt and with good reason. It was at this point Anna raised her hand to ask Ivor what was the calculated value of Herbie's farm including the farmhouse and all the land he'd acquired. Ivor told her that he'd had to get a value for the calculation of death duties but he thought the nett value to Herbie's heir was in the region of 3.5 million pounds. This produces a suppressed gasp from around the room and even the taciturn Alf looked a little surprised especially as on the face of it farming had not been an area of high profit in that part of Yorkshire. Ivor then proceeded to outline the riders that would have to be observed if the heir was to benefit fully from the inheritance . Firstly the farm should be continue to be run as it had been under Herbie's ownership both organic and with the highest regard for wildlife within it's boundaries. The farmhouse was to be used by whoever took on the farm but only limited modernisation would be allowed so that the accommodation was capable of supporting a family such as Andys'.
At this juncture Andy'd mum put her hand up and asked why if there is nothing in the will for her was she asked to come from New Zealand?
Ivor replied........

....."I am coming to your part now Mrs. Ledonion" with a disapproving glance in her direction. He then started explaining that Herbie, unknown to almost everyone, was a sleeping partner in a building development company. It had started when he had bought his first land. The plot he purchased was in fact two plots, one of which did not adjoin his own land being much nearer the nearest village. Shortly after he purchased it he was approached by a small developer with a view to buying the land. Herbie was never one for the quick buck suggested a deal where he went halves on any profits arising from the build to which the builder agreed. As it turned out this was a very shrewd move by Herbie as the development turned out to be a big success and along with his share of the profit he was given a half share in the company. Now the building trade has had a few ups and downs over the last 35 years but at the present time Herbies half is valued at around ten million. It is this half share he has left to Mrs LeDonion to say sorry for the way he treated her when they were both young. Andy was overjoyed for his Mum and felt an urge to shout "yes" and punch the air. This he did over and over until he heard Anna's voice saying Andy,ANDY, wake up, what's the matter? Andy suddenly relaxed and pulled the duvet back over his sweaty chest.
"Oh my god Anna" said Andy "I've been having the most strange dream"
"I'm not surprised" said Anna,"the state you were in when you came home from the pub last night, you must have eaten half a pound of that extra strong cheddar in the fridge all chased down with pickled onions and a couple of pickled eggs. There clearly were no half measures for you in the pub.
It's a good job it's Saturday and you haven't got to get the girls to school."
Andy wearily got up and went downstairs just in time to see Anna heading for the front door. She looked back in his direction and shouted "the postman's coming up our path with a big brown envelope, can you come and take it off him"

...Andy slowly crawled out of bed and after short visit to the bathroom clumped slowly down the stairs and into the kitchen. His mouth felt like he'd been licking a dog and tasted like it too. "What had happened last night?" he pondered and was still doing so when Anna's voice interrupted his reverie with what seemed to him the daftest question he'd ever heard. "Do you want a cup of coffee or not?" he heard his wife repeating and he finally answered with a sullen nod in her direction. He plonked himself down in his usual chair awaiting for what he hoped was a restorative beverage to kick start the day. While he waited the large brown envelope which had arrived was stuck under his nose for inspection...........
