The bad guys are the larvae of two types of insects: clothes moths and carpet beetles. Moths can't bite, eat or sting, they just suck nectar.
So stop swatting them !!!!!!!!!!!

Do you release them in the same place and do you see where they go?
I just wondered if they always flew off in the same direction but maybe they just still lie there in the open trap for a while ... but what if it's chucking it down with rain ... I expect you leave them somewhere sheltered

I leave them somewhere sheltered and where the birds can't get! They soon learn where to get a free meal, so you have to be cunning .
I knew it was the larvae 
I don't swat anything
