This past week we have been hosting a pair of pet rats that belong to our grandson. He and his parents have decamped to Wales for the week. This is the first time we've had them as usually his other grandparents who live a lot closer do the honours. I'll admit to being no great fan of the wild variety hastening their departure whenever they show up but these two are very endearing. They are mainly nocturnal although they do put in an appearance if there is any food on offer during the day. They will eat almost anything it seems with fruit and yoghurt being particular favourites. I'm impressed with their agility and the dexterity when using their front paws to hold food while eating.
Like all pet animals they have to be cleaned out but this is no great faff as they have a special tray(in poo corner). They are not unduly smelly and on the whole low maintenance.
I would recommend them as pets for any child from the age of 8 or 9 onwards.

Highly intelligent, aren't they, rats ? I concur with your opinion that they are good pets for the young - anything which makes kids think has to be a good thing.
