Done even better this morning while out. 3 clouded yellows, each one at a separate location of the walk, so no confusion.

They certainly seem to be having a good year, William, lots of reports local to me if them being spotted, far more than previous years

Thank you PB, looks like a good year for them. I looked up the Butterfly conservation trust for Devon, lots of sightings for July, none for June. See what August brings.

I wonder if the very hot weather on mainland Europe is driving them northwards?

There was a discussion about that, Jack, with the potential of more southerly European breeding areas being too hot/dry, and winds from the south aiding migration. Apparently the caterpillar food source is plentiful in UK too.

I stopped into Honiton Garden Centre on my way to Exeter on Thursday and as I was giving Gosh a leg stretch in their overflow car park a Clouded Yellow shot past me

Well, today was the day of all days, am claiming 8 cloudy yellow sightings, was probably a few more than that but decided to stick with the 8. Brings my tally this season sofar to 20.
