Am seeing red admirals on the wing lately. Not a lot but today seen several.

Somehow a Peacock butterfly found it's way into my lounge last night. I tried to catch it but failed leaving it in the dark until this morning. My daughter finally caught it and it is now in a box to put in the garage until spring.

While out today, seen a butterfly on the wing, probably a red admiral.

It's not butterfly weather around here. I think I will not see another one this year.

Today was spring like, plenty of sunny spells, hardly any wind and warm. Was just about home from a walk when I seen the fluttering of a butterfly. Lucky for me it landed a couple of times, and was able to identify it as a Painted Lady, looked it up to make sure. What a great surprise to see that, and mid winter.

Amazing! I'm not expecting to see any butterflies up here or any other insects. Well spotted Willpar.

Happen to look online to see what are the first emerging butterflies at this moment. Seems that the Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone can come out in February, and a few more in March. Have not seen any of those mentioned yet. But it does beg the question that last year was not good at all.
Less butterflies equals less breeding pairs, so more than likely les to see, maybe for the next several years. Will be interesting to see how it pans out the coming months.

The irony is that last year (2024) the early butterflies has the best of the weather because the cool damp weather didn't kick in until high summer. I saw plenty of Brimstones plus Holly Blues which are not on the early list but can be if the weather is kind.
