No no, "Small White" is one of the very few names that I know.
Anyway, it's all Jacksparrow's fault

for spoiling the literally meant joke.
The next "first" that I spot I'll call it 'Colin'

Jacksparrow - it's what you're there for, to take the blame and scattergun the abuse

First butterfly for ages - a quite small one, very dark, flying rapidly thus <<<<<<<.
Went out and it flew in front of me, thus >>>>>>>.
I've enough trouble with landed ones - no chance with a flying one even if it didn't know where it was going .....
The instant ident. gives Purple Hairstreak or Ringlet but frankly I'm not sure about either of them.
Aaaanyway, it was good to see a butterfly for a change

The ID is very much dependent on the size of the B/fly. Ringlets are not small(in Butterfly terms). A small dark one could be the female of on of the blue butterflies but they are more dark brown than black.
PS I took some butterfly

today including Ringlet. I will post later.

My Buddleia has just started blooming and I spotted a Small Tortoiseshell drinking the nectar today.
PS There would have been a photo but by the time I'd fetched the camera it had decided to seek pastures new.
