Cats can't be tamed, they'll never bend to the will of mankind like dogs. It's an impossible dilemma 'cos cats are wild free spirits and to keep them confined is cruelty. It's simply not in their nature.
Bad luck for birds though :(

Agree with Jacksparra. I think that the answer is to educate cat owners. Will probably take a generation, assuming someone in power takes an interest. One of my families neighbours is feeling the financial pinch and has turned their three house cats out to the street. This is not an unusual occurrence. A nice lady in my road takes in stray cats and one of them is pregnant. This is also not an unusual occurrence.
Pet cats are domesticated. House cats. It is the owners that turn them loose to the wild, which they adapt to very well, as dogs do too.

I have been a little smug in the past claiming to have kept the cats out of my garden during daylight hours. There now appears to be one of the little *#@@$%! s that thinks that agreement is null and void. I spotted it leaping out at some sparrows having a drink in the ground bird bath today. Thankfully it wasn't quick enough but it was a close call. I escorted it to the perimeter of my property voicing my displeasure en route.

A cat tried to get a young woodpigeon in my garden yesterday. Pigeon was on the edge of the water feature. Went to get camera but by the time I got back the pigeon was gone. Some feathers on the water. Then I noticed the cat was absolutely drenched. Must have jumped after the pigeon but it got away and cat ended up in the water. Not nice water either, green slimey stuff.

Vid from last night.

Your cat story made me laugh Willpar. Pity we haven't got one of your famous vids to see exactly what happened. It would have gone viral in no time. :D

Put another camera in the garden to watch a recycled hedgehog feeder. As I had my suspicions.

And I was right.
