First newt sightings of the year today. If any Tadders have survived the newts will soon polish them off.

I was trawling the duckweed on the nature pond today and caught a half grown newt. This was encouraging as I didn't see one at all last year.

Quite likely. They love tadpoles and can hide in the duckweed undetected.
