Done away with my port feeders for the same reason JS. Just too much waste. I now use a deep tray feeder and make up my own sparrow food. Red and white millet with kibbled sunflower hearts. As wood pigeons will use it as well i add whole sunflower hearts also. And just put out a measured amount each day. Hardly anything left by the next morning. Gets wet when it rains, but don`t seem to put the birds off from eating it.

This past week has seen a sizable reduction in the amount of food being eaten. Clearly the hot weather does not suit our feathered friends either. :shake:

I had a reduction in starling numbers, but still put out same amount of food. Though the bird bath was used less, that did seem strange.

House sparrows are not large birds, but my flock are putting away two suet balls a day, most days. Not counting the seed i put out and some live mealworms.

You are lucky to have so many of them Willpar, they are so lively and charming birds  . My group is much smaller, but growing in size. They don't spend much time around though, they come and go :)

My sparrows go through phases of wanting to eat fatballs. Currently there attention is elsewhere.

Sparrows seem to have stopped taking away the live mealworms now, and not getting through as many. Hopefully come autumn/ winter, will attract some different birds also.
