WHAT I SAW TODAY.....
Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....
I've just come back from my holiday in Greece, and while there, I saw large numbers of swallows everywhere. But really everywhere! It was just so amazing to see them in so many places and in such large numbers. They were the most common birds (apart from good old pigeons
) that I saw there

I expect all the Swallows were gathering ready to cross the Med to Africa. It is their last chance to get a good feed before the arduous transit.Butterfly wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2019 11:52 amI've just come back from my holiday in Greece, and while there, I saw large numbers of swallows everywhere. Walking along a lane this morning, and a bird flew over. Landed on a telegraph pole and started climbing up. Was a lovely GSW. not seen one in a while.

All this within the space of 15 minutes this morning. 4 LTTs, 2 fledgling Woodies,a Coal Tit, 2 Blue tits, 5 Collared Doves and lastly but no means leastly a Magpie with no tail feathers. I was disappointed not to get a photo of the latter one as it looked rather odd
What I heard today was a Blackbird singing his spring "come and get me ladies" song. Boy, is he in for a disappointment

That's all very good, Jacksparrow. Like Number 11 buses they come along in bunches. (Collective noun - a bunch of buses
.)
About the baby woodies - seems to be a lot of woodies about at the moment, youngsters included, to the extent that I looked them up and discovered that they can breed in any month of the year.

Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....
Saw a grey heron on a roof of a neighbour's house
, it got harassed by 3-4 magpies, it looked like a perching rights dispute
. It stayed for only few minutes, but it was so unusual to see such a big bird
