Don't usually see them in the street nuthatch, they generally stay down the woods. At least it weren't my street.

I do not know this as a fact but it would not surprise me if they nibbled bark to sharpen their teeth.

Hi Jacksparrow - I saw it on this programme where they featured squirrel pie. They showed the damaged trees in the wood first, where they've been culling the squirrels. Maybe that was to get some people to not feel so uneasy about eating them.

Well that's what rodents do, isn't it ?? 'Cos their teeth grow constantly.

Well yes, but what I was rather clumsily trying to suggest that the Squirrel was getting no nutritional benefit from bark nibbling.

Trendy London restaurants serve squirrel. Maybe that habit is spreading out into the country ?? Such things quite often do.
I'm all for it - I hope millions and millions of grey squirrels are eaten enthusiastically until they become a rare luxury item .

I like to sit and observe things and I've never observed this observation previously .....

elsewhere I recently mentioned a treerat which is making free with my garden and the goodies therein. The last couple of days it has been burying items like a thing possessed: digging up the lawn and making a bad job of filling in the excavations. Very early this morning I watched it digging and burying in the lawn on the opposite side of the road.
Thing is, when it's finished it invariably jumps into the air and hurtles off a few feet in a very good expression of joie de vivre. Then it calms down.

At a swift count there are 12-ish holes in my lawn and here's a few examples thereof .......
The lawn is bad enuf without this !!

Although it looks like grey squirrels eat bark, my take is they are after a membrane underneath the bark that contain natural sugars. Much more tasty than bark.
