ASH DIEBACK DISEASE

Post by Placido » Tue Oct 07, 2014 10:13 pm

I heard on't radio today that They reckon to have discovered a cure for ADD.
Seems they inject concentrated garlic juice into the sap of an ash tree and the well-known antiseptic virus-fighting properties of garlic finishes off the dieback infection.

That's not a jest (although it does seem to be ....... ), I honestly heard that. Don't quite know what to make of it.

Yep. Featured heavily on the Beeb tonight placi. They (scientists) inject it into the bottom part of the tree and the sap caries it to the higher areas (a bit like injecting into a human vein or artery). I think it was something like 95% success (certainly in the 90's). Have long believed that the future lies in natural solutions rather than chemical/biological solutions.

Although the BBC item did go on to talk about ADD they started by showing the scientists treating an Oak tree with the garlic while saying that the success rate had been 95% for Oaks. I think they were hoping to find a similar cure for Ash.

Thank you for that, Jacksparrow.
An Expert said in that article that the garlic cure wouldn't be suitable for ADD. That's very sad.

:tree: Trees on an intravenous drip :) :hug2:

So that answers my question .....
"If you go back to the tree the day after, and crush a leaf that is in the extremity of the crown, you can often smell the garlic."

Also it does say that in laboratory conditions allicin kills the pathogen chalara which is responsible for ash dieback - I wonder why it wouldn't be effective in a woodland setting.
