Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....

Sitting at computer early this afternoon. I turned on the swivel chair to look at the bird table. As I turned all the bird flew off quickly. Thought it was me that scared then but no. Suddenly a female Sparrowhawk came into view, saw me, turned and flew off the way she came. She was very close to m...

Re: Feral Pigeons

feral Pigeons have been visiting my garden for at least 20 years. In recent years the average number was 15 per visit. Three visits per day was the norm during the summer and two in winter. Today and every day this week there were no visits whatsoever  The piles of dropped food under the fee...

Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....

A juvenile Sparrowhawk. It had tried to make a kill in my front garden and ended up on my drive empty taloned. This is the first time I've ever seen a Sprawk in my front garden.

I would agree with Butterfly's assessment. It's an old bird making the best of what day's it has left.

Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....

I had a first in the garden today. My attention had been drawn to the hanging fatball feeder by the arrival of a family of LTTs. they were flitting in and out of my Dog rose bush to take their turn on the feeder when I noticed another bird in the same vicinity. I had the binoculars handy and quickly...

Re: BLACKBIRDS

I have had a tailless male BB visiting and for some time I've thought he'd just had a close shave with a predator, however I got a much closer look today and he appears to be suffering from a mite infestation. He is losing feathers from his head and begins to look a bit scruffy. I also noticed he's...

Re: TREES

I have a similar problem with the ivy on my external wall. It needs to be trimmed annually and I can usually do it in a day with my battery powered hedge trimmer. The resulting clippins fill up my green bin 3 times over so I bag them up and store them and the decant into the bin when there is room.

Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....

It has been my experience that Sparrowhawks are not particularly frightened of humans. Respectful is probably a better word. They will flyoff if challenged but that does not deter them for another day. I had one male who was a regular visitor for several years who flew very close to me in an attempt...
