Re: Your Garden Hedgehogs

i think I may have discovered a reason why my hog(s) have stopped visiting. My daughter saw a fox trot through the garden last night. It they(the hogs) have been frightened or even attacked they may choose to look elsewhere for food.

I don't usually get many butterflies but I do get few during the summer. Not this year tho, I don't recall seeing any at all this year :(
I don't think anyone has seen as many butterflies this year compared with recent years but seeing none is very surprising.

Hi can anyone help with the I.D. of this little garden bird. Feeds mainly on the ground and likes to dart in and out of the bushy area of my garden.

The little bird is a Dunnock (aka Hedge Sparrow)
That is quite a dark coloured example but still recognizable.

Re: Your Garden Hedgehogs

It is now 4 or 5 days since any hog food was taken overnight. I thought it was still too mild for any hibernation attempt so perhaps there is a better offer elsewhere.

Re: Your Garden Hedgehogs

Hi JS, the cold they can cope with, however deep snow would be another matter, as it would be hard for them to get around, but those kind of winters are quite rare down south. Yes it could happen, but will be prepared if it does. Can put a dish in the feeder if still there and keep it topped up. Th...

Re: Your Garden Hedgehogs

Last night had observed a late juvenile go into a feeder that is seldom used. Just looked into it and there is a mother with two juveniles in there. Not really tiny juveniles, so am a bit surprised that they are all still together. While I am delighted you are having some juveniles late in the seas...

Grapes can be quite large JS. how do they manage that?
The ones I grow are about half the size of the shop bought ones. They manage them quite well as I never find any wasted ones.

Got back from the shops to see a female blackbird eating some rowan berries. Great to see.
My rowan berries are almost gone. The blackbirds have had most of them. They have also been eating my grapes which is OK as it is partially the reason I grow them.

Re: WHAT I SAW TODAY.....

I had a GSW in the rowan tree this morning. The tree has some dead branches and he was knocking the bark off looking for insects. In the front garden I had 3 Jackdaws and 2 Magpies all at the same time. Strangely they were all doing the same thing which was looking for spiders and insects on my neig...
