Sorry to read that, greenfinch
Last night there was a right kerfuffly noise coming from the side hedge in the back garden and when it got light I could see that all the periwinkle heads in that area were on the path.
I couldn't decide what was in there - I was standing on the step listening to it all - was quite alarming

I don't know what it was, Placi - there were no other sounds other than the hedge being moved about inside. The sounds were coming from about half way up
I only wanted to step outside and put some suet pellets in the window feeder, which is not now near an opening window but I was sort of scared to go down the steps
Re: WHAT ELSE I SAW TODAY
I wish I'd seen what was occuring last night - all the peanuts were gone from the ground feeder that looks like a none scattered around as is so often the case. Fat block gone and the dog biscuits strewn about with only a few left in the feeder - probably just a fox - garden very aromatic this morning

Out last day of hols today (and the best ) and we were lazing under the shade of the tree when I heard a bird making a racket. It was a lady blackbird shouting at something. Then I noticed what that something was. It was a stoat (or weasle). It was about 30 feet from me, near the building, then ran off down the slope and into the reeds around the pond. We also saw it the other side of the pond, it ran towards the trees, then half way there, turned back.
The dogs didn't notice it, but when they went for a wander they could sniff it.
The sister-in-law (whose house we were at) had never seen one there before.
I'm assuming it was a stoat as it was squirrel size and bounded.
