THE FIRMAMENT

Post by Placido » Tue May 01, 2018 9:51 am

At present we are enjoying The Pink Moon :).
It's very low in the firmament which is unusual. Quite a sight and very bright.

Moon was so bright last night. Tonight is the actual full moon (Blood moon). Hope the sky is clear.

We've had more than a month of clear skies and now we want it to be clear for the eclipse it looks like we might be thwarted by rain. I'm going to go out and have a watch of it though. Might get lucky. There's another in January if it doesn't work out.

Cloud as far as the eye can see so it's a no go for me. I've seen one before so I'm not too gutted but I might do the January one even though it'll be at 4am!

Apparently last night (thick cloud ) was the best Blood Moon there will be this century so that's that then :(.
Got up to see but there was only a pale smudge through the cloud. However, will have another look tonight .......

:wave2: :rara: Welcome to The Goblin :D. A brand newly discovered dwarf planet right out there in the deep cold beyond Neptune in the Kuiper Belt; its only friend at the moment is the demoted Pluto who is in a deep sulk because of the unfairness of it all.
Aaaanyway, The Goblin is strengthening the astronomers' suspicion that riiiiight out there is a giant planet we haven't found yet but no doubt numerous telescopes are now trained out there hoping to Be The First :magnify:.

TG takes around 40,000 years to orbit the sun, which is why these things are quite difficult to find however big they are.

Astronomers everywhere are agog 'cos a regular radio pulse has been discovered waaaaay out there 500 million light years away (you can't be back home in time for tea). It "transmits" for 4 days and then goes quiet for 12 days - is it listening for a reply !!!???.
Jodrell Bank to SETI are at fever pitch :sofa: - maybe it's true, we are not alone.

I find it very difficult to get excited about a few radio bleeps apparently coming from outer space. Given the time it takes for any such transmission to reach earth from outside our solar system the signals could be thousands of years old from a now dead planet.
I will get excited if an intergalactic spaceship touches down in the full glare of the earth's media and a being emerges saying"we come in peace, take me to your leader". Quite what they'll make of Donald Trump I don't know  :shake:
