Heron

Post by Nick » Wed Jun 25, 2025 7:41 am

Well this is one bird I did NOT want to see at my pond!

Yesterday morning I spotted it and chased it off hoping I'd discouraged it from returning. I was loathe to cover the pond in netting as lots of birds use it daily so I took the chance.

I managed to get some brief footage on my phone which I've slowed down as it was surprisingly quick.

.......then after repositioning some cameras just in case, he returned this morning.

As the video shows he's taken at least one of my Silver Rudd which I've had since they were tiddlers. It's only a small pond that had 3 Rudd and some Sticklebacks. Fortunately I have a bigger pond where I keep most of my native fish (Silver & Golden Rudd, Barbel and Sticklebacks) which would be more difficult for him to access.

It's a fantastic bird but one I did NOT want to see in the garden!

That is a lovely video Nick. Herons can be a problem for people with ponds.

I know a heron has visited my garden because I have seen it. To the best of my knowledge it has never got a meal. I have no fish but do have frogs and newts. The one in the video was visiting before 6 AM , if that were the case in my garden it would never be seen.

He returned a few days ago at 4.45am. Interesting that he could fly in virtual darkness.
