I only buy the more expensive fat balls. They are around £11:00 for 50. Much better than the cheaper ones, with plenty of suet. Just a smattering of seeds. They look like a ball of suet.

I hear what you say but until recently quality did not seem to be a problem for my customers . If we get a really cold snap I expect the current indifference will be replaced by them disappearing within an hour of being put out.

Last time I ordered bird food I got half coconut shells and suet blocks. Not the all year round seed and meal worm suet blocks but the berry ones. Unfortunately my garden clients don't appear too keen on the berry ones.

I know it's not the intended way to offer them but I've found that breaking them up and putting them on the bird table sometimes works. Blackbirds will appreciate the gesture and of course the Starling will eat anything anywhere.

Will give it a try Jacksparrow. I have tried a whole berry block on the bird table along with sunflower hearts chips but they still take a while to eat it. Sunflower heart chips are eaten fairly quickly.

The suet snowman i put out on xmas eve has all gone now, the starlings made short work of it. Will put out the suet star tomorrow.

Buy them online butterfly. The suet snowflake weighs a whopping 700gr. So should last a few days or so.Xmas treat for the birdies.

On what was a very dull morning with rain, sleet and snow it was 10am before the first bird appeared in search of food. Were they having a lie in or was there a better breakfast offer elsewhere?

With a forecast of a sharp frost last night I decided to empty the ground level bird bath so there would be fresh unfrozen water for my customers this morning. This little piece of advanced planning was very well received with Blackies and Starlings queueing up in a disorderly manner to take advantage. I was was amazed that ,given the sub-zero temperatures, their priority was to get a bath rather than a drink.
