Is the second one a juvenile?
Peregrine is correct. Both adult birds.

Nice encounter on my walk this morning. Was approaching a stream that had long grass beside it, and only a few feet away a heron flies out. Looked like it may have been a young one as there was no mane on the back of its head. Nice to see though.

I think today a first for me was one of my Blackbirds feeding on the hanging fat ball feeder. Blackbirds never look happy on hanging feeders but this one seemed to have sussed the technique out. :)

There was a very young blackbird dead on the lawn this morning. I left it alone. Strange that either a sprawk or a cat (bound to be one or the other) hadn't taken it away.
Two hours later it had gone.
I don't know whether it had recovered from a mauling or has crawled into the undergrowth to die or the culprit came back for it - I guess I never will know but I like to think it got better.

It is possible that the young bird had flown into something and was stunned rather than dead. If it recovered from being dead it would be a miracle and there will be pilgrimages to your garden to see if it can happen again.
