Very near to where I live this time, in a field with cows. There were two egrets. They looked quite large and took off as soon as I got to the gate. But they just circled and came back a bit farther away.

The little egrets settled in the UK some time ago and now its the turn of their larger cousins the Great Egrets. I expect the rough weather we have been having has driven them inland a little.

There are Little Egrets on my local river about half a mile from where I stay. Usually see them perching on trees on the river bank.

I've just had a thought, the big white birds might be spoonbills but they really need to be in or around water.

Had one of those moments while out this morning. Was down the woods for a look around and aways come back along the top. While just ambling along, a sparrowhawk flying at ground level flies by. Had something in its talons that was rather large, probably why it was flying so low. It did land, but only for a few seconds then headed down into the woods. Think it may have had a squirrel.

It must have been a female as the male bird would not be able to fly with a squirrel. Good spot Willpar.

Out in the lanes this morning. Seen these birds going along the hedge but could not get close to see what they were. Then for a few seconds one went into tree. Got a look and it was redwings. First ones i have seen for several years.

There have been reports of a lot of them coming to the UK this winter. The weather in their native Scandinavia has become very cold quite early this winter.
