Re: WOOD PIGEONS
I'm sorry to report that the nesting attempt has failed. I'm not 100% certain as to what happened but when I sat down for breakfast I noticed that there was no pigeon on the nest. My first thought was that the eggs had been infertile and they had given up the incubation but later I spotted what looked like a broken egg on my drive. Close inspection proved it was a Woody egg and blood present showed it had been viable. My guess is that either the Jackdaws or the Magpie I have visiting had spotted the nest and helped themselves

Oh, I am sorry, Jacksparrow. What a great shame especially after mum had been so patient.
Maybe she'll have learned something from that.

I never thought the nest site was ideal for several reasons but predation from corvids never entered my mind. There are, in my vicinity, several larger tress with a much better chance of hiding a brood so hopefully the pair will go home hunting there.Placido wrote:Oh, I am sorry, Jacksparrow. Re: WOOD PIGEONS
I find it a little touching that each day a Woody visits the now empty nest for a while. It appears to mooch around adjusting the position of one or two of the twigs making up the nest before flying off again. The total length of the visit is around 10 minutes.
Re: WOOD PIGEONS
That is without doubt the most tragic thing I have ever read. 'Your' woodie has a memory, Jacksparrow, and it's not a good one .
They're not dumb animals at all.

Re: WOOD PIGEONS
I have not seen a Woody on or near the nest site since the weekend so it appears to be out of their system.
