Bird Feeders

Hi can I ask what types of food are you topping your bird feeders up with as I find the cheap stuff you purchase in the shops dont look upto scratch. Any advice will be welcomed.😊

Hi Wren!
I buy sacks of mixed sunflower seed (black & striped) in 10 or 20 kilogram sacks from a feed store. All birds love it including the Wood Pigeon (they eat them shell and all but have special digestive systems). I pay about 19€ for 10 kg.

Alas, none of my birds will touch the expensive wild bird mixtures!

Oh, and the same feed store sells beef suet seed balls by the carton of 50 or 100. Last time I ordered 100 but they go very fast if you have cute, little Blue Tits around! Woodpeckers and Great Tits also love them.

I'm in Northern Germany and the feed store is down south in Münster but they deliver free of charge with a 29€ purchse. What a great deal! 😊

Charles thank you for the information. I will price some feed stores around the area where I live. I know ebay have some descent suppliers.👍

Before settling on any particular feed I think it is worth experimenting for a little while to see what your local birds prefer. Cheaper foods are bulked out with cereal grain such as corn so unless you have plenty of pigeons much of it will be discarded while the birds look for something they like. I feed sunflower kernels separately as they are very popular with the finches.
I only buy in bulk (20kg bags) and use Amazon.

I have noticed with the cheaper bird feed certain bits just get left and not used up.
