HELPING WILDLIFE
HELPING WILDLIFE
There is a lot that we can do to help our wildlife on an individual basis, so I thought that this might be a good topic for us all to share issues that are either new, or of concern.
Thought I'd kick this off after seeing the terrible things that discarded elastic bands can do. The effect on Hedgehogs is extremely distressing.
Please DO NOT open this link if you think you will be upset by the photo of a Hedgehog who has been snagged by an elastic band. If you do open the link, there is a petition that will go to Royal Mail regarding the continual dropping of elastic bands by their delivery teams.

For our part, we can be proactive in picking up elastic bands when we see them (I already do this for any that I see in my path, but having read the shocking news, I will now pick up all that I see).

Re: HELPING WILDLIFE
Elastic bands (courtesy of the postie) were a common sight on the footpaths around my town at one time and quite frequently on my property too. But it is now some time since I saw the last one so I think something has been said to the posties. My postie now uses one of the pram-like affairs to convey his mail on the round rather than use a bike as in the past so I'm wondering if the new kit includes a receptacle for redundant bands so they can be re-used.
Re: HELPING WILDLIFE
My postie still has a sack of mail and I find elastic bands (red ones) hither and yon.
(I couldn't watch the vid .)

Re: HELPING WILDLIFE
I haven't watched the video either - I didn't realise it would be one - thought it would be a pic, which is enough.
We still get elastic bands about and the postie uses a
Would like to sign the petition though.

Re: HELPING WILDLIFE
At Gweek Seal Sanctuary, Cornwall they have rescued over 2,000 seals since they started in 1958 in St. Agnes. They have been in Gweek since 1975.
There is one young seal there that won't be returned to the sea as it was born there much to the staff's surprise.
Otters there too:
The staff used to sprinkle their food with vitamins/supplements but of course the otters always take their food to the stream and wash it before eating so the supplements are injected into the food now.
