I read today that the Silver washed Fritillary has been turning up this year in hitherto unexpected locations. Perhaps this was another visitor to Ambridge AKA Placi's garden.

Did some investigating on the Net. Looks like it is a Red Admiral. Seems to be a few different patterns.

Yes it is an admiral. Lovely butterfly. I have a question. Not about butterflies as such but of butterfly houses (small) as in the same size as a bird nesting box. Are these a novelty or do these serve as purpose for our butterfly friends.

On balance a bit of a novelty. Only a few species hibernate as an adult and how do you decide what is an ideal spot to position it. There is no harm in having one but don't be disappointed if it gets ignored. Even with bird nest boxes they can be ignored for years especially if the location does not suit what can be very fussy home hunters.
