My two treerats are fast becoming so fat that they very soon will be unable to get inside the feeder cage - so it's not all bad, izzit ?!?!?!?! :weep:

The nightmare scenario is that they squeeze inside of the cage and then gorge themselves on the goodies and get stuck. You might need to buy a good pair of leather gloves and a bottle of Fairy Liquid.

I glanced out of the patio door this morning to see a Squirrel feasting on my Sunflower Hearts. That is the first sighting of one in my garden for several years. I had been suspicious as hazel nut shells were appearing on the lawn but it could have been bird activity. :( :squirrel:

No sign of my bushy tailed invader today but I think I am not on it's list for a frequent visit :shake:

Another visit from the bushy tailed one today :( There are loads of hazel nuts under my nut tree at present but my sunflower hearts feeder is a much easier meal unfortunately. :grumpy:

I usually leave them for the beasties. The squirrel is having some but is more interested in the easier meal.
Some years I have had a good crop of empty shells  but this years seem to be full. I tried a couple and they were fine.

Very sweet, lovely tasting.
Early mankind used to make them a big part of autumnal diet. Excavated middens show that they used to roast them - preservation and increased protein. Not daft .
