It can be expensive, but you can make your own. My first was a cardboard box with an energy saving bulb on top! Not really electrically safe! These days I would have used one of the low voltage bright LED bulbs that are now becoming available.
My second (which I still use ) was a plastic storage bin. I used a UV aquarium strip light on top, - this did mean buying some control gear.
My third and favorite is a 'Robinson' type trap - here's the photo - This was made from a round plastic planter tub with a large plastic saucer inverted on top with a large hole cut in it to suit a 12 inch brewers tundish, cut off to make the funnel.
The vanes on top are cut from thin perspex with a transparent plant pot saucer on top, (these are not essential).
The tub and saucers were from a firm called Stewart.
The main cost was the control gear which at the time was about £40. The whole project cost about £70.

Here's a clip of a simple trap. It seems to be powered by a low energy light bulb, so no expensive control gear required. It's giving me ideas!! I keep looking at my wifes prized lamp shades  surely I could cobble one up out of a couple of them ??

 and I thought Placi was joking about the egg boxes

I love all this fiddling around with stuff :bunny: had never heard of a tundish :shake:

Is there an advantage to having the vanes?

Some moths just fly back and forth and around the lamp. The vanes collect them and they end up amongst the egg boxes in the base of the trap. :)

The egg boxes trick isn't new - the reason I knew was 'cos I saw it on tv many moons ago. It was a sort of Attenborough-type prog and it seems that moffs like the crevices offered by the egg pack shape.

Wotta lotta were in that trap   !!

Nuthatch, you could fix that lady's table !! Only needs a bit of tlc.
