Many thanks for your help team. Your diagnosis was spot on. After some drastic trimming, I used the branches to line along the wall creating a drainage system. The branches absorb the water running off the back neighbours roof and disperses slowly. I've added more 'logs' from other cuttings. The ground no longer floods and the Cottoneasters .... well, see for yourselves. :) :)
