I have to report the very unfortunate demise of Rooney, the neighbourhood cat, beloved by all. He was apparently poisoned - I assume he ate a mouse/rat 'cos he was a real hunter. Within cat marching distance from me there are 2 chicken pens (2 separate neighbours) and the finger of suspicion points ...

Since the cold snap began, the consumption of food, particularly suet pellets which the birds have shunned for a long time, is steadily rising. The few blackbirds have however disappeared entirely .

Big clap for the wild flowers, Jacksparrow . I still have a few oxeye daisies and the dogrose is still sort of flowering. Best thing is the abundance of berries on the largest pyrawotsit.

To my great surprise, at lunchtime - bad news - a young hedgie trundling across the back lawn. It seemed to be fine but it's never a good sign in the daylight. I'm not optimistic
